The French Ligue 1 today, Thursday, confirmed that the postponed match between Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyon will take place at Marseille's Velodrome Stadium on the scheduled date of December 6, following its postponement due to an attack on Lyon's bus while heading to the stadium last month. The disciplinary committee stated it would impose no penalties due to the incident, a decision that angered Lyon, which said it would appeal the ruling.
The match was originally set for Velodrome on October 29 but was postponed to December 6 after the visiting team's bus was pelted with stones and bottles en route to the Velodrome, resulting in injuries to coach Fabio Grosso. On November 2, the French league announced a date for the match but did not specify the venue, while Lyon's sports director Vincent Ponsot called for it to be held at a neutral ground. However, the league ultimately decided to hold the match in Marseille as initially planned.
The league stated, "The competitions committee of the French league, based on information and guarantees received from local authorities in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, has decided to hold the match between Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyon, postponed from the tenth round, at the Velodrome Stadium on Wednesday, December 6, 2023."
After the disciplinary committee declared it would not penalize Olympique Marseille as it was not responsible for the incident that occurred on a public road outside its stadium, Lyon announced it would appeal the decision. Lyon stated, "Olympique Lyon is deeply shocked by the disciplinary committee's decision, which revealed its inability to deal with the extremely serious events faced by our mission near the Velodrome on Sunday, October 29."
Lyon is bottom of the French league with four points from ten matches, while Marseille is ninth with 13 points.
