Samsung is close to launching its first mixed reality glasses in the first quarter of next year. These glasses are expected to rely on a brand new Qualcomm processor and a custom Android system for smart glasses. It is likely that these glasses will be unveiled during the launch event of Samsung's new Galaxy S24 series smartphones, which are anticipated to be released in the early months of next year.
Recently, Qualcomm revealed its Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, which was used by Meta to power its latest mixed reality glasses, the Quest 3. The new Qualcomm chip is expected to bring a different experience to Samsung's mixed reality glasses and marks the company's return to the smart glasses market after a long absence, following the halt of production of the Galaxy Gear VR virtual reality glasses in November 2020.
The company may base its processor architecture on cores developed by Nuvia, which Qualcomm acquired in 2019. These technologies have also been employed in Qualcomm’s latest processor for personal computers, the Snapdragon X Elite. This processor is known for its superior capabilities, including the use of artificial intelligence in data and graphics processing.
There are also negotiations between LG and Qualcomm to use the upcoming Qualcomm chip in LG's smart glasses. The expected price for Samsung's and LG's glasses with the upcoming Qualcomm processor is around $2,000. Despite the high price, it remains lower than Apple's smart glasses, the Vision Pro, which are priced at $3,499.
