Britain announced on Wednesday a package of sanctions against those it described as "violators of women's rights worldwide" in Iran, Syria, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan. The sanctions, which coincide with International Women's Day, include asset freezes and travel bans on four individuals, including military personnel accused of overseeing rape crimes. The sanctions also targeted an Iranian government entity. UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly stated in an email that "these sanctions send a clear message that perpetrators of horrendous gender-based violence must be held accountable." He added, "We are enhancing our efforts to defend women and girls, and we will use all available tools to address the ongoing inequalities." The announcement of the sanctions also coincided with the UK government publishing the "Women and Girls Strategy," outlining its plans to address gender inequality globally.
