Suicide of 6 Students in Egypt Due to High School Exam Results

Six students in Egypt have taken their own lives due to failing their high school exams or not achieving the required scores for university admission. In Sohag Governorate in the south of the country, a female student died after ingesting a toxic substance just minutes after the exam results were announced, due to failing in some subjects. In the city of Toukh in Qalyubia Governorate, two female students committed suicide by consuming a toxic grain pesticide after failing their exams. Additionally, in the city of Kafr Shukr in the same governorate, a female student ingested a pesticide after receiving a score that did not qualify her for her desired college. In Sharqia, a girl hanged herself in her bedroom after failing the high school exam out of fear of her family's anger.

It is notable that "toxic grain tablets" are used by farmers in Egypt to preserve grains and cereals from decay, insects, and pests during storage. The danger of these tablets lies in their content of "phosphine gas," which is highly toxic and lacks any antidote, killing a person within just one hour. Two years ago, the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee of the Egyptian Parliament issued important recommendations to prevent the misuse of these tablets for suicide.
