Met Gala 2023 Kicks Off with Karl Lagerfeld's Cat as a Notable Guest

The charity event "Met Gala" has commenced at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and is considered one of the most prominent fashion-related events globally, taking place every spring on the first Monday of May. This year, the gala is held today, May 1, in celebration of the opening of the new exhibit at the Costume Institute, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty." Guests, including many celebrities, were requested to wear outfits by Karl Lagerfeld in his honor, with expectations for special looks reflecting the legendary designer's six-decade career attending the prestigious event.

The theme of this year's "Met Gala" aims to pay tribute to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, with the event highlighted by his name. Lagerfeld was always keen on being represented at the Costume Institute through various exhibits, the latest being “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” in 2011, despite his belief that fashion does not belong in a museum, but rather in the streets.

Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, spent decades crafting clothing for some of the most famous and largest global brands, in addition to his own eponymous label.

Vogue, the organizing magazine for the event, is known for its secrecy regarding the guest list, but Page Six revealed that Kim Kardashian will attend alongside one of her sisters, despite earlier reports suggesting that she and her famous family might not receive invitations this year.

The Post also reported that Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette, received an invitation, with the cat's caretaker stating, "It is an event honoring Karl's legacy, and Choupette is clearly an integral part of that legacy."

The Twitter account "Pop Hive" shared a list of some guests invited to the gala, including Selena Gomez, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Rosie, Gigi, Lady Gaga, Ryan Reynolds, Miley Cyrus, Rosalía, Bad Bunny, Blake Lively, Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, Cardi B, Jenna Ortega, and Zendaya. Approximately 400 guests are expected to attend this year, which, while a significant number, is still less than the 500 to 600 attendees before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, actress Penélope Cruz shares the honor of chairing the 2023 Met Gala with tennis star Roger Federer, singer Dua Lipa, and Michaela Coel, alongside Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, who has been overseeing the event annually since 1995.
