Ukraine Requests Greater Freedom to Strike Targets Within Russia

Ukraine has announced that it will urge its allies to grant its forces more freedom to target military sites inside Russia following the United States partially lifting restrictions on the use of certain weapons supplied by the West.

Last week, Washington authorized Ukraine to use some of the weapons provided to strike specific military targets on Russian territory as part of Kyiv's efforts to counter attacks in the eastern Kharkiv region. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated in a press conference with his Estonian counterpart, "It is not a 100 percent approval. It comes with some rules that must be followed." He added, "We will continue to work with our allies to expand the scope of its application."

This issue has caused divisions among Ukraine's supporting countries, as some hesitate to allow Ukraine to conduct cross-border strikes for fear of dragging them into direct conflict with Moscow. Kuleba also mentioned that Russia is employing a three-pronged approach to dissuade countries from participating in the Ukrainian peace summit scheduled to take place in Switzerland later this month.

He noted that Russia aims to convince nations not to attend and encourages interested countries to send low-level representatives. Kuleba remarked, "These attempts to obstruct the summit are systematic and extraordinarily extensive, which once again confirms that we are doing everything right." He added that Russian efforts have been focused on countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin has repeatedly stated that any talks regarding peace guarantees in Ukraine must include Russia, which has not been invited to the summit. Moscow has also issued threats to countries that allow Ukrainian forces to strike Russia using provided weapons.
