Power outages have increased along the Texas coast after Hurricane Beryl made landfall today, Monday, unleashing heavy rain and strong winds on Houston. Hours after Beryl reached land, around one million homes and businesses were without electricity, according to CenterPoint Energy in Houston. Rising waters quickly began to close streets throughout Houston, and flood warnings were issued for a large area of the Texas coast. The National Weather Service predicted that Beryl's strength would weaken and it would transition into a tropical depression by Tuesday, moving northeast.

The storm reached the United States after causing widespread destruction last week in Mexico and the Caribbean. More than a thousand flights were canceled at Houston's airports, according to data from FlightAware. Hurricane Beryl brought heavy rain across Houston upon its arrival and is expected to deliver destructive winds to East Texas near Louisiana as the storm moves northward after making landfall.
