British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has clarified in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that Iran shares responsibility for preventing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. He stated on the social media platform X, "I made it clear that Iran is a partner in responsibility for preventing these attacks, given its long-standing support for the Houthis," adding that the attacks "threaten innocent lives and the global economy."
In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Abdullahian informed his British counterpart that "the root cause of the Palestinian crisis is not from October 7, but rather 75 years of Israeli occupation, the continuous violation of the basic rights of Palestinians, war crimes in Palestine, and genocide against Palestinians." He added that "England's role in these issues is, of course, clear."
According to the statement, Amir-Abdollahian condemned "the silence of some Western governments regarding the crimes committed by the Israeli regime against Palestinians, which have led to the martyrdom of 21,000 civilians in Gaza over the past eighty days." The minister affirmed that "Iran considers Hamas a liberation movement against occupation and apartheid, akin to anti-apartheid movements in South Africa."
The Iranian Foreign Minister criticized the United States and some Western nations for their double standards regarding Gaza and Ukraine. The statement said: "The Israeli regime must not be allowed to commit massacres against women and children or perpetrate genocide in Gaza and ignite the region while viewing the stopping of a Zionist ship in the Red Sea as a threat to the security of this vital economic waterway."
Regarding threats against Iran, Amir-Abdollahian warned that Iran "will respond strongly to any unfortunate adventures by the Israeli regime and its aggressive actions." In a post on his account on the social media platform X, Abdullahian indicated that he informed David Cameron that Iran considers "the continued support of the United States, Britain, and some Western governments for the war crimes committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza and the Palestinian territories to be a major factor in expanding the instability in the region."
He called for decisive action from the international community, emphasizing the importance of "stopping the killing machine and the crimes of the Zionists." The Iranian Foreign Minister warned, according to his post, of "the dire consequences of continuing to support the evil acts of the apartheid and occupation regime in the region." He stated that Iran and its allies have always been a positive part of regional developments and security, affirming security in the region without reliance on a dual approach. Abdullahian noted that the meeting also touched on several bilateral issues without detailing what they were.
