The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the summoning of its ambassador to Kenya following a scandal caused by the racist remarks he made. According to "KenyanForeignPolicy.com," during a meeting held in the Kenyan capital Nairobi with diplomats from Eastern Europe, Romanian Ambassador Dragoș Viorel Sighiz, pointed out a monkey outside the window and commented, "This is an African group joining us." The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a comment on "hotnews.ro" that contrary to the ministry's regulations, the Romanian ambassador to Kenya did not inform the Foreign Ministry about the incident that occurred in late April 2023 until June 8. Later, the diplomat apologized in writing, according to the Romanian Foreign Ministry, which expressed hope that "this isolated incident will not affect the profound nature of the relations between Romania and the countries of the African continent."
