The city of El Fasher, the capital of Darfur, has witnessed the fiercest battles since the outbreak of fighting about a month ago between the Rapid Support Forces and the army, supported by allied movements, amidst a large wave of displacement that has turned the largest city in the region into a "ghost town." Both sides of the conflict have utilized heavy weapons, drones, and intensive shelling, causing significant destruction to hospitals, public facilities, and residential neighborhoods, while exchanging blame for the serious escalation.
The World Health Organization (WHO), a UN agency, warned of the potential serious repercussions resulting from the main hospitals going out of service. In a statement on its "X" platform, the organization expressed its deep alarm over the recent attack on the southern hospital, the only facility with surgical capability in the city, which further restricts access to life-saving services. For its part, the United Nations Human Rights Commission pointed to the "deeply devastating impact" on civilians due to the clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher, warning that the residents and internally displaced persons are trapped in the city and face the imminent threat of famine.
