Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami called on Iranian voters to cast their votes for the reformist candidate Masoud Bezhsky. He considered voting for the only reformist candidate among the six competitors as the sole path for Iranians to achieve change in the country.
Bezhsky, in remarks to the press on Wednesday, said, "I thank Khatami for his kindness, but when I hear the praise directed at me, I feel a heavy burden." He emphasized that he "only calls for justice and aims to help the needy as long as he is alive."
The 69-year-old heart surgeon reminded that all ethnicities, nations, genders, ideas, or beliefs in Iran should be treated with fairness. Bezhsky, who has Azerbaijani Turkish roots, has consistently courted non-Persian communities during his electoral campaigns, which has led to several attacks and criticisms, even to accusations of separatism due to his heritage.
However, he received significant support from several prominent reformist figures, most notably Khatami, as well as former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
