Netanyahu Requests to Convert "Sde Timan" Detention Center to Investigation Center Only

Netanyahu Requests to Convert

The Israeli Attorney General informed the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested to convert the "Sde Timan" detention center into an investigation center only. The Israeli newspaper "Israel Hayom" reported that Netanyahu's position contradicts that of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who is seeking to obstruct the transition of "Sde Timan" to merely an investigation center. The newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" clarified that, contrary to Ben Gvir's decision, Netanyahu agreed to evacuate the "Sde Timan" prison following the Supreme Court's ruling mandating its closure due to the testimonies and crimes that have leaked regarding the treatment of prisoners inside it.

The "Sde Timan" detention center is notorious for torturing prisoners detained by the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and holding them under inhumane conditions. It is estimated that Israel has detained hundreds of Palestinians from Gaza in "Sde Timan" since the beginning of the war on Gaza in early October, amidst extensive human rights violations.

At the end of May, the Association for Civil Rights, Physicians for Human Rights, the Center for the Protection of Individuals, the Committee Against Torture in Israel, and "Machsom Watch" submitted a petition to the Supreme Court "demanding an end to the torture of detainees at the 'Sde Timan' detention center and its closure after numerous appeals made to the government and the army went unanswered."
