European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a "strong Europe" today during a period of "great concern and uncertainty" as she seeks to convince European lawmakers to grant her a second term, according to AFP. In a speech delivered to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, she stated, "I will not allow extreme polarization to prevail in our societies. I will not accept that extremists destroy our European way of life, and I stand here today ready to lead the battle with all democratic forces."
Von der Leyen emphasized the need to "stop the bloodshed in Gaza immediately," highlighting "the importance of an immediate ceasefire in the region, the release of hostages, and preparations for the day after the end of the war." In a related context, von der Leyen mentioned in a media interview that "the EU's goal of banning the sale of cars that emit carbon dioxide will remain in effect until 2035." She added that the EU will amend policies regarding vehicles to allow the use of electronic fuels.
