Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Ankara will extend an invitation to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which could happen at any moment, expressing hope for the rekindling of Turkish-Syrian relations. During his return journey from Berlin to Istanbul, Erdogan stated, "Russian President Vladimir Putin has an approach regarding our meeting with Assad in Turkey, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has his own approach. Here we are talking about mediation, so what is preventing it with our neighbor?" He confirmed that "we have now reached a stage where, if Bashar al-Assad takes a step to improve relations with Turkey, we will respond appropriately."
