Severe Heatwave Alert in India

Northern India is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave that has persisted for weeks, with meteorological forecasts predicting continued temperature rises in the coming days. Residents in Northern India are suffering from ongoing high temperatures, leading schools to suspend classes and increasing the risk for outdoor workers of heat strokes. With expectations of elevated temperatures persisting in the next few days, several states have been placed on high alert.

Some parts of Rajasthan reported temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius last Monday, while the states of Punjab and Haryana have also seen significant temperature increases, with some areas of New Delhi exceeding 48 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. India typically declares a heatwave when temperatures rise above 45 degrees Celsius.

The extreme temperatures in Northern India coincide with the ongoing six-week general elections, posing additional health risks as people wait in long queues to cast their votes, with voting concluding on Saturday. High temperatures are also affecting animals, which face risks of dehydration and heat strokes.
