The Municipality of Istanbul has sounded the alarm due to repeated warnings about a potentially devastating earthquake in the city, which could exceed 7 degrees in magnitude. In light of this serious situation that is unsettling citizens, the municipality is striving to take possible precautionary measures to mitigate disaster.
In this context, informed sources from the Municipality of Istanbul confirmed that officials are continuously discussing limited measures to protect infrastructure, ensuring it is earthquake-resistant, particularly given the presence of natural gas networks, drinking water, subways, and tunnels, which poses a significant risk.
The sources stated to "Al-Arabiya.net" that more than one geologist has confirmed the likelihood of a strong and destructive earthquake, urging the government to take the matter seriously and be prepared to act to prevent catastrophe.
Additionally, the office of geologist Sinan Turkan indicated that “there is no escape from an expected earthquake in Istanbul.” The office, which involves dozens of university students, mentioned that “government preparations such as renovating old buildings, evacuating those at risk of collapse, and preparing shelters could help reduce the potential disaster's impact.”
Turkish geologists reject giving a specific timeline for the expected earthquake, but they collectively assert that a powerful earthquake will strike Istanbul. They emphasized that warnings from specialists are necessary and important for the government to prepare and take necessary measures regarding rescue teams, securing health services, and arranging humanitarian assistance, along with raising awareness among residents on how to respond to any potential natural disaster without panic.
Geologists warn that the number of faults in Turkey reaches approximately 500, which could cause earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 5.5, making the country face a real threat, especially since recent earthquakes have shown the presence of more than 500 active faults.
