The city of Helsinki has experienced a "cyber attack" that may have exposed the data of 80,000 students and 40,000 municipal employees, according to the agency responsible for cybersecurity in Finland. Josie Aironen, an official at the National Cyber Security Center, stated, "The data network used by the city's education department, which supervises students from childhood through secondary education in Helsinki, was attacked on April 30." Aironen, whose office assists affected agencies, added, "This is one of the largest cyber attacks targeting Finnish cities." By exploiting a vulnerability in the server connected to this network, hackers were able to access names, email addresses, identification numbers of students and their legal representatives, as well as employees in the capital's schools. The city of Helsinki stated, "The hackers also obtained the usernames and email addresses of all municipal employees." Jukka-Pekka Ojala, the director of Helsinki's services, remarked, "This is a serious data breach that could have unfortunate consequences for our clients and employees." According to the city, "Some documents contain confidential or sensitive personal information," such as medical certificates or sick leave documents.
