Algeria: Did the United Nations Grant an Exception for Israel?

Algeria's representative to the United Nations, Ammar Ben Jamil, called on Security Council members to take responsibility regarding Israel, "which chose to respond to the International Court of Justice with bloodshed." According to diplomatic sources, during a Security Council meeting requested urgently by Algeria, Ben Jamil expressed "Algeria's strong condemnation of these unjustified airstrikes, which claimed the lives of more than 45 Palestinians, including women and children."

He noted that "these attacks occurred just 48 hours after the International Court of Justice issued an order requiring the occupying power to end its assault on Rafah," emphasizing that "the order of the International Court of Justice is legally binding and that the Zionist occupier is obligated under the United Nations Charter, including Article 94/1, to respect the decision of the International Court of Justice in any dispute it is a party to."

He added that "the Security Council is mandated under the same charter to make recommendations or take decisions regarding the measures that should be taken to implement the ruling and that it must now ensure respect for international legitimacy." He continued: "Tell us if the founding fathers of the United Nations granted an exception to the Israeli occupation to choose whether or not to accept the court's rulings?"

The Security Council held an emergency closed consultation session yesterday, Tuesday, regarding the situation in Rafah at Algeria's request.
