Today, Saturday, the social media platform "Facebook" lifted the restrictions imposed on the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, placing him on an equal footing with the current Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden. Nick Clegg, the head of global affairs at "Meta," stated in a statement: "In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to listen to presidential candidates on the same basis."
"Meta," the parent company of "Facebook," had imposed this ban and suspended Trump's accounts on "Facebook" and "Instagram" indefinitely following the attack by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, after the former president praised those involved in the attack. The company lifted this ban in February of last year; however, it announced that Trump would be subject to protective measures such as "enhanced suspension penalties" if his posts violated its standards. The platform "X," formerly known as "Twitter," had also banned Trump's accounts but lifted the restrictions last year.
