The election committee in Iran has announced that registration for candidates for the presidential elections will begin next Thursday. The Tasnim news agency reported that the 14th presidential election was initially scheduled for June 2025, following the four-year term of the 13th government, which was held earlier. However, due to the event that resulted in the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and his accompanying delegation, it was decided to hold the elections earlier than planned.
On the past Monday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei appointed Mohammad Mokhber as the head of the country, based on the Iranian constitution. According to the elections headquarters announcement, in coordination with the Guardian Council, the timeline for the elections has been finalized. The registration period for candidates will be from May 30 to June 3, lasting for five days. Subsequently, the Guardian Council will review the qualifications of the registered candidates from June 4 to June 10, and on June 11, the names of the candidates for the 14th presidential election will be published.
According to the spokesperson for the elections headquarters, the deadline for announcing the candidates is set from June 12 to June 26, with the voting for the ninth president of Iran scheduled for July 28. The elections headquarters has announced its readiness to conduct electronic voting in several areas, including Tehran and other major cities, but this is subject to the approval of the Guardian Council, which has not made a final decision yet. The 14th government will begin its work in July 2024 and will continue until 2028.
