The Kuwaiti news agency reported that the Amir of Kuwait "ordered the appointment of Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as Crown Prince." On Saturday, Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued an Amiri decree to appoint Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as Crown Prince. The official Kuwaiti news agency (KUNA) stated, "Today, an Amiri decree was issued appointing Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as Crown Prince."
Article two of the Amiri decree stipulates that "the Prime Minister should present our order to the Cabinet to take the appropriate constitutional measures," and that the Amiri decree will enter into effect immediately upon issuance, according to Article three. The appointment of a Crown Prince in Kuwait comes three weeks after the Amir's decision to dissolve the National Assembly and suspend some constitutional provisions for four years.
Sheikh Sabah Khaled, 71 years old, served as Prime Minister of Kuwait from 2019 to 2022 during the reigns of the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He also held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2011 until 2019. It is noteworthy that a new government was formed in Kuwait in mid-May, marking the first government in the era of the new Amir.
