Seven Algerian political parties have announced the establishment of a new political coalition proposing a "consensus candidate" for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 7. The coalition aims to promote "national dialogue." During a meeting in the capital, the seven parties indicated that their presidential candidate is Belkacem Sahli, the Secretary-General of the National Republican Alliance.
The new coalition confirmed its objectives, which include "enhancing national dialogue, creating a suitable environment for the success of the upcoming presidential election, and formulating a shared vision regarding various national and international developments."
Belkacem Sahli emphasized that the upcoming presidential election is a "historical moment where various programs will compete," noting that his candidacy is part of a "moderate vision aimed at restoring dignity to the democratic republican movement, achieving political reform, and building a strong and diverse economy." Sahli also mentioned that the new political coalition "remains open to all political formations, whether they wish to join or coordinate with it."
On March 21, the Algerian presidency announced that early presidential elections would take place on September 7, 2024, three months earlier than originally scheduled, a move that surprised the political scene and the Algerian public. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stated that the reason for announcing early presidential elections is technical, aimed at returning to an acceptable electoral schedule, noting that the 2019 elections resulted from specific circumstances. The president also refrained from discussing his candidacy for a second term, saying "it's too early, and we are still working."
