During the match between Grêmio Anápolis and Centro Oeste in the Brazilian Second Division on Wednesday, an unusual incident occurred. Grêmio Anápolis goalkeeper Ramon Souza suffered serious injuries after being shot with a rubber bullet.
According to the Brazilian CNN network, the horrific incident took place after the final whistle of the match. Footage shows players arguing with armed police at the touchline post-game, when one officer suddenly brandishes a rifle, pushes a player, and orders them to step back. Moments later, seemingly without warning, the officer readies the rifle and fires.
Disturbing images spread quickly online, showing Ramon Souza screaming in pain and limping away in agony. The photos depict the player lying on the field with his leg wrapped and covered in blood, while a medical team member administers first aid before he is taken to the hospital.
Grêmio issued a statement on social media confirming the incident and announcing their intent to take measures to ensure that the responsible individual is held accountable. The statement reads: "The club condemns this unfortunate, absurd, and disgusting event that took place at the Jonas Duarte Stadium on Wednesday night."
It continued: "After the match against Centro Oeste, our goalkeeper Ramon Souza was injured by a rubber bullet fired by a police officer." The statement concluded: "This was a terrible, irrational, and criminal act by someone who is supposed to ensure the safety of those present at the Jonas Duarte Stadium."
