Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced on Wednesday evening, following a visit to Washington, that Israel "does not want war" against Hezbollah but can inflict "serious harm in Lebanon." Gallant told reporters at the end of his multi-day visit, "We do not want war, but we are preparing for all scenarios," noting that "Hezbollah understands well that we are capable of causing significant damage in Lebanon if war breaks out." According to Gallant, Israel has killed more than 400 Hezbollah operatives in recent months.
Earlier, the Israeli Defense Minister stated that he discussed with U.S. officials the need to change the "security reality" along Israel's border with Lebanon. He added that he talked with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan about developments in clashes with Hezbollah, amid American concerns about the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip and the outbreak of a full-scale war with Lebanon.
These developments came as a White House spokesperson confirmed to Al Arabiya and Al Hadath reporters that Washington is working hard to prevent a second front in the north through intensive diplomatic efforts, referring to Israel's border with Lebanon. The spokesperson emphasized that the protection of Americans in Lebanon is a priority for President Joe Biden, adding that the U.S. will remain in contact with American citizens registered at the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon. The White House also urged American citizens to exercise caution.
