Stampede Claims Dozens of Lives During Religious Gathering in India

Indian officials have announced that at least 27 people, including women and three children, have died in a stampede during a religious event in the Hathras area of Uttar Pradesh, northern India. The incident occurred during a "satsang" (prayer meeting). Photos from the community health center showed many bodies being transported there in buses. The Chief Minister of the state, Yogi Adityanath, announced the formation of a committee to investigate the incident.

Conflicting information has emerged regarding the victims. Dr. Umesh Kumar Tripathi, the Chief Medical Officer of the city of Eta, stated, "We received 27 bodies, 25 women and two men. Some injured individuals have also been transferred to hospitals." Rajesh Kumar, the Chief Inspector of Police in Eta, confirmed that three children were among the deceased, saying, "So far, 27 bodies have been sent to the hospital, including 23 women and three children."
