Paolo Insilvi, a member of the European Parliament from Italy, warned that the spread of fentanyl in EU countries threatens to ignite a "new plague in Europe." Insilvi wrote in an appeal to the European Commission: "Considering that fentanyl, also known as 'zombie drug,' is being sold at low prices and is becoming increasingly available on our continent, it could turn into a new 'black plague' in Europe." He added that EU countries are currently witnessing a significant increase in drug use. The MEP cautioned that "this alarming trend that has become an unmanageable problem in the United States could destroy the lives of millions of people in Europe."
