The International Tennis Federation has named Serbian Novak Djokovic and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka as world champions in 2023 due to their outstanding performances in this year's Grand Slam tournaments. The Federation stated that it awarded Djokovic, 36, the Men's Singles title for the eighth time, further enhancing his unprecedented record after winning three of the four Grand Slam titles this year. The veteran player has now increased his Grand Slam titles to 24, matching Margaret Court's record total of these prestigious titles. He also won the ATP Finals title for the seventh time, which is also a record, and finished the year at the top of the ATP rankings.
Sabalenka won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, secured second place at the US Open, and reached the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon. She lost her top ranking to Poland's Iga Swiatek during the WTA Finals but expressed her happiness with her performance and results during 2023, along with being crowned world champion. She stated in the International Tennis Federation's announcement: "I can't wait to return to the courts in the new season."
Ragiv Ram and Joe Salisbury received the Men's Doubles award after winning the US Open title for the third consecutive year, while the Women's Doubles award went to Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens after finishing as runners-up at Wimbledon.
