The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, revealed that he receives numerous messages containing threats to his life. He told Russia Today in a press interview, "There are many messages threatening my life, threats that come directly through text messages. I have no idea how they got my number." He mentioned that he had to install an alarm system in his home, adding that he is facing increased calls from his office staff to use a security team on a permanent basis. The agency noted that Tedros, a 57-year-old immunologist from Ethiopia, has faced criticism from all sides, including the United States and China, throughout the pandemic as the leader of the WHO. In 2020, Ethiopian authorities seized a house he had rented in the capital, Addis Ababa, following comments in which he criticized the government's handling of the Tigray crisis, his birthplace.
