The Minister of Economy and Trade, Amin Salam, issued a circular regarding the fight against the rise in prices of goods due to the increase in customs dollar prices, warning traders against adjusting the sale prices of imported goods that were taxed at the 1500 lira rate. The circular states:
With the upcoming issuance of the public budget law for the year 2022 in the official gazette, which sets the customs dollar at 15000 lira, and given that many goods, especially food items, are exempt from customs duties, the Ministry of Economy and Trade aims, within its competencies, to control prices. This is to prevent certain traders from exploiting the increase in customs dollar prices to raise prices and achieve illegal profits.
Therefore, the ministry requests importing companies of food and consumer goods to provide the Consumer Protection Directorate with lists of the imported goods, including the quantities currently available in warehouses and their sale prices to consumers before and after the approval of the public budget law for 2022.
The ministry reaffirmed that it will not allow any adjustment in the selling prices of goods to consumers for those imported items that were taxed at the rate of 1500 lira, as violations will be monitored in preparation for referral to the competent judiciary.
