Security Alert and Explosive Materials in Amman: What's Happening?

In Amman, security reinforcements have been observed around several buildings, particularly after an explosion occurred earlier in an abandoned building south of the Marka area, not very far from the airport. It was initially reported that the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder. However, investigations later revealed traces of explosive materials inside the abandoned building, which led to the ongoing security measures in the surrounding area.

The Jordanian Public Security announced in a statement today, Saturday, that security agencies are dealing with an investigative case in the southern Marka area. They clarified that preliminary investigations indicated that a group of individuals was storing quantities of explosive materials inside a house in that area.

Explosives experts from the engineering corps handled the materials and detonated them on-site after taking necessary precautions, with no reported injuries, according to the Public Security.

Furthermore, the Public Security urged everyone to stay away from the site of the house and allow security forces to carry out their work without any interference. They concluded by stating that the case is under investigation, and details will be published once completed.

This incident follows the announcement by security authorities in mid-May 2024 of foiling a significant attempt to smuggle weapons and explosive materials for extremist cells in the country. Meanwhile, Hamas denied any involvement in any matters related to weapon smuggling or receiving smuggled weapons into Jordan.
