The European Union is a Committed Partner for Lebanon

The European Union mission in Lebanon announced in a statement titled “The European Union is a Committed Partner for Lebanon” that “the European Union continues to support Lebanon and its people in difficult social and economic conditions and has allocated €229 million this year to enhance necessary reforms and economic development. Several priorities have been identified for this new financial package.”

It pointed out that “the first priority is to enhance good governance and support reforms. In this context, the European Union will assist Lebanon in implementing public administration reforms focusing on integrity, transparency, and accountability, in line with the opportunities defined in the recent staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund. Our assistance will aim to reform civil service, improve public financial management, and ensure access to information.”

It added, “Moreover, the European Union will work with state actors and civil society to empower Lebanese women and contribute to achieving gender equality. The EU will promote women’s leadership and participation in political fields and the public sector, working to create the necessary environment to improve their representation in the labor market. As part of its commitment to support Lebanon in its reform agenda, the EU will back the implementation of legislation aimed at protecting women from all forms of violence.”

It continued: “In the framework of the priority to enhance environmentally sustainable recovery, the European Union will support Lebanon’s green program and the transition to renewable energy. It will finance energy efficiency equipment in public sector buildings and contribute to providing more efficient public services. The EU will also focus on increasing the competitiveness of Lebanese industries, particularly in the agri-food sector, by supporting entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology transfer for sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, the European Union will continue to provide substantial aid to disadvantaged Lebanese and Syrian refugees, helping them secure the essential services they urgently need in social protection, education, health, and water supply.”

It concluded: “The European Union remains committed to supporting Lebanon and its people in moving forward towards the recovery and stability they deserve.”
