Floods Hit Libya, Claiming 3 Children Lives

For several days, floods have been sweeping through several cities in southern Libya, submerging entire neighborhoods. In the Tahala area near the Libyan-Algerian border, water has recently flooded streets and submerged farms. The Emergency and Ambulance Authority announced today, Friday, the death of 3 children in Tahala due to the floods, while efforts continue to rescue others trapped. Mayor Ahmed Kleikli stated in press remarks that the rainwater has completely inundated the neighborhoods of the municipality, highlighting the urgent need for blankets and tents as soon as possible. In response, the Libyan government appointed by the parliament has formed an emergency and rapid response committee for the city of Ghat, led by Deputy Prime Minister Salem Al-Zadma, to take all precautionary measures to deal with the adverse weather conditions in the area. These scenes have reminded Libyans of the devastating floods that struck the city of Derna last year (2023), which claimed thousands of lives and destroyed infrastructure.
