CAF Clarifies the Truth About the Delay of the Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued an official statement today, Wednesday, to clarify the truth about the postponement of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, which is scheduled to take place in Morocco. CAF stated in a post on its official account on X, "Reports regarding the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 are incorrect."

The statement emphasized that the executive committee of CAF will meet to decide on the dates for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025. It concluded by saying, "CAF will then issue an official statement regarding this matter."

French media reports revealed that CAF had decided to postpone the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco to January 2026 instead of hosting it in the summer of 2025. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations conflicts with the newly formatted Club World Cup, which is held once every four years, with its first edition taking place in the United States in June 2025, featuring 32 teams.

L'Équipe reported that Véron Omba, Secretary General of CAF, stated that there is a conflict between the continental tournament and the dates for the Club World Cup, which will involve four African clubs: Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad (Morocco), Esperance (Tunisia), and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa).

The CAF Secretary added, "We can play the Africa Cup of Nations after the conclusion of the Club World Cup, but holding two tournaments and then starting a new season shortly after will not be in the best interests of the players."

As of now, CAF has not announced any decision regarding the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco.
