Complaint Regarding Mines at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has found anti-personnel mines at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and has complained for the second consecutive month that this violates safety procedures. Russia seized the plant in the early days of its invasion of Ukraine last year. Ukraine and Russia exchange accusations of shelling the plant, while the IAEA is trying to establish a safety mechanism to prevent incidents.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that "IAEA inspectors stationed at the plant noticed the presence of mines in the buffer zone between the internal and external barriers of the site, as well as observing mines during previous inspections."

Grossi noted in a statement that "the presence of such explosives at the site conflicts with the IAEA's safety standards and nuclear security guidelines and increases the psychological pressure on the plant's staff." Moscow claims that the plant will eventually be connected to the Russian power grid.
