COVID-19 Cases Rise... Are We Returning to Masks?

Dr. Jack Mkhbat, a specialist in infectious diseases, pointed out that there will be a new COVID-19 variant emerging regularly, which is typical for the virus. He mentioned that the current variant is derived from flirt and is spreading rapidly, with many cases particularly in the United States. He stated via Voice of Lebanon: "We have noticed a resurgence of cases with the new COVID variant since June in Lebanon, but it is not dangerous as it remains a derivative of Omicron." He emphasized that the risk level in the cases is low, except for the elderly or those with weakened immune systems, and the need for hospitalization is negligible with no patients in intensive care.

Mkhbat explained that the symptoms of infection are characterized by a sore throat, fever, mild cough, and runny nose, with patients recovering within two to three days. He noted that the risk of infection is minimal, especially since the majority of Lebanese have either contracted COVID-19 or received the vaccine, which has created a form of social immunity or herd immunity, thereby reducing the risk of infection.

In response to a question, Mkhbat confirmed that there would be no return to mask mandates, stressing that handwashing remains the primary method of prevention. He advised those with symptoms to refrain from visiting the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.
