Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of the Portuguese national team, revealed that the "Euro 2024," which he is currently participating in, is the last of his career. The Portugal team advanced to the quarter-finals of the Euro after a thrilling win against Slovenia on Monday night, winning 3-0 on penalties after the match ended in a goalless draw. Portugal will face France next Friday in a highly anticipated European clash.
In remarks highlighted by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on his "X" account after the match, Ronaldo said, "This is of course my last European Championship." The 39-year-old added, "But I don't feel sad about it; rather, I feel excited."
The Saudi Al-Nassr star continued: "I expressed my apologies to the fans (after missing a penalty), I will always give my best for this jersey, whether I make mistakes or not, and I will continue to do this throughout my life; I have to take responsibility."
Ronaldo missed a penalty in the 105th minute of the Slovenia match, but he managed to score the first penalty in the shootout, contributing to his team's qualification.
Although he is the all-time leading scorer in the Euro with 14 goals scored over five consecutive editions, Ronaldo has failed to score in any of the four matches in the current edition. The Portuguese star has also not found the net in his last eight matches in major tournaments, marking the longest goal drought of his career.
