Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian has appointed former Foreign Minister and architect of the Iranian nuclear agreement, Mohammad Javad Zarif, as his assistant for strategic affairs, as announced by state media today, Friday. According to the Iranian news agency (IRNA), Bezhakian told Zarif in his appointment address: "You are responsible for monitoring the most significant national and international developments as well as the success in achieving constitutional objectives, and to report to me on that." Zarif, who served as foreign minister from 2013 to 2021 under former President Hassan Rouhani, was close to the reformists but did not belong to any faction. Zarif was a prominent figure in Bezhakian's election campaign and played a key role in the new president's victory. He is the architect of the nuclear agreement that Iran reached in 2015 with the international community, aimed at easing sanctions imposed on it in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program.
