Iraqi coach Rady Shanishil has announced the end of his tenure as the head coach of the Iraqi Olympic team following their exit from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Iraqi team was eliminated in the group stage after losing 0-3 to Morocco, finishing with 3 points in Group B from a victory over Ukraine, while the qualification spots went to Morocco and Argentina.
Shanishil, 57, took charge of the Iraqi U-23 team in July 2022, leading them to win the West Asian Championship and secure third place in the U-23 Asian Championship, which qualified them for the Olympics. He confirmed in television statements that his coaching journey with the U-23 team has come to an end, having already informed his players of the decision.
Shanishil expressed his desire to make way for new coaches with a new generation in the upcoming phase, marking the end of his career with the Iraqi Olympic team, which he described as the best period of his coaching career. Shanishil previously coached the Iraqi national team, as well as several Iraqi clubs including Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Zawra'a, Al-Shorta, and also had an external experience with Qatar SC.
