Ukrainian Army: Russia Launches Airstrike on Kyiv

The military administration of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, reported that Russia launched an airstrike on Kyiv early Tuesday morning local time. Serhiy Popko, the head of the administration, stated on the Telegram messaging app: "In the outskirts of Kyiv, air defense systems are engaged in repelling the attack."

In response, the White House announced that it does not support attacks inside Russia, following a question regarding a drone strike from Ukraine that damaged buildings in Moscow earlier on Monday. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters: "In general, we do not support attacks inside Russia."

Russia has indicated it will take severe retaliatory measures against Ukraine following the drone strikes. One of the drone attacks occurred near the Russian Ministry of Defense, which described the incident as a brazen terrorist act. Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, noted on Monday that Moscow needs to expand the range of targets it strikes in Ukraine. He wrote on Telegram: "We need to choose unconventional targets for our strikes. Not just storage facilities, energy centers, and oil installations."

This comes after a drone attack targeted the Russian capital, Moscow, on Monday morning. A source in the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense stated that this attack was a "special operation" carried out by Kyiv. The unnamed source clarified that the drone strike on Moscow was a special operation executed by the military intelligence of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.

The Russian Foreign Ministry declared that Russia reserves the right to take "severe retaliatory actions" following the drone attacks targeting Moscow and the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed. The Russian Foreign Ministry said: "We consider these events to be a new resort to terrorist methods... to intimidate the civilian population," accusing the West of "standing behind the brazen actions" conducted by Kyiv. It added that "the Russian Federation reserves the right to take severe retaliatory actions."
