Maria von Kerkhove, a representative of the World Health Organization, reported that over 40 athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 during the Olympic Games in Paris, and the number of infections is rising alarmingly. Kerkhove stated, "In recent months, regardless of the season, many countries have seen significant increases in COVID-19 cases, including at the Olympic Games, where at least 40 athletes have tested positive."
Furthermore, Australian swim team coach Rowan Taylor revealed that some of his swimmers participated in Olympic swimming events over nine days while suffering from COVID-19. Some other swimmers, including Lani Pallister and Ella Ramsay, withdrew from races, while others competed despite showing symptoms of the infection. Among those infected with COVID-19 was Zac Stubblety-Cook, who won a silver medal in the men's 200-meter breaststroke and competed while unwell. Caroline Broderick, head of the medical team for the Australian delegation in Paris, mentioned that "84 COVID-19 tests were conducted within the Olympic village, and nearly half of these tests returned positive for the virus."
