Scientists recommend getting enough sleep instead of sitting. One of the recommendations from "classical doctors" states: "Sitting is better than standing, lying down is better than sitting, and if you are lying down, then sleep." Those who "pump" their muscles in "rocking chairs" for energy-saving reasons adhere to this recommendation. You can also maintain your health by introducing variety into your sedentary (sitting) and harmful lifestyle.
Epidemiologists from University College London have reached conclusions that may seem controversial to many in what is called the "cross-sectional study." They analyzed results obtained by their colleagues during numerous experiments involving more than 15,000 people. The scientists were looking for "everything beneficial" for the cardiovascular system, identifying the most useful among them, meaning specific actions or even positions that people take throughout the day. Researchers ultimately prepared a kind of ranking, from "beneficial to harmful," and presented their recommendations in the European Heart Journal.
Data from which the ranking was derived indicates that lying down and sleeping are healthier than sitting, especially while watching television. Joe Blodgett, the lead researcher and study supervisor, stated: "You can greatly benefit your health by alternating between sitting and moderate or vigorous activity." This can include jogging, brisk walking, going up stairs, or any activity that raises your heart rate and gets you breathing faster, even for a minute or two.
Some may wonder: "When I was a boy, did I foolishly give up my seat on the tram for an elderly person? Was I caring for my health, not theirs?" Previously, posters hung in building entrances said: "Take care of the elevator's safety; it protects your health." And now doctors advise using the stairs often—for health once more. How everything has changed in this life!
