Exchange of Prisoners Between Hamas and Israel

Exchange of Prisoners Between Hamas and Israel

After several hours of delays, the release of 39 Palestinians was completed in exchange for 13 Israeli detainees and 4 foreigners outside the agreement.

The curtain fell on the second batch of the prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel after dramatic consultations in Tel Aviv amid massive protests. Vehicles from the International Red Cross carrying the 13 Israeli detainees and 4 foreign nationals arrived at the Rafah border crossing, from where they were transferred to the Kerem Shalom crossing and awaited a helicopter to take them to hospitals in Israel and then to their families after interrogation by the Shin Bet. On the other side, 39 Palestinians, including women and children, were released, with their arrival point decided to be an undisclosed location to avoid the noisy receptions like those of the previous day.

On Saturday, Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid Al-Ansari announced that Qatari and Egyptian officials helped to resolve the obstacles that delayed the release of the detainees as part of the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. Al-Ansari stated, "After a delay in executing the release of prisoners from both sides, the obstacles were overcome through Qatari and Egyptian communications with both parties, and 39 Palestinian civilians will be released tonight in exchange for the departure of 13 Israeli detainees from Gaza, in addition to 4 foreigners outside the framework of the agreement."

Hamas announced on Saturday that it had responded to the efforts led by Qatar and Egypt to ensure the continuation of the temporary ceasefire agreement between the movement and Israel, which began on Friday. Hamas expressed its appreciation for these efforts, stating, "The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has responded to the appreciated Egyptian and Qatari efforts that were activated throughout the day to ensure the continuation of the temporary ceasefire agreement after they conveyed the occupation's commitment to all the terms stipulated in the agreement."

Earlier that day, Hamas decided to delay the release of the second batch of hostages until Israel committed to allowing aid trucks to enter northern Gaza.
