Do "Air Fresheners" Affect Our Health?

Do

Andrey Durokhov, an associate professor in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the Russian University of Technology, announced that the regular use of air fresheners causes serious health issues. He states, "Fresheners contain volatile organic compounds that can pollute indoor air. Inhaling them causes respiratory irritation, headaches, and allergies, and can lead to more serious diseases, such as asthma and chronic respiratory diseases." According to him, the components of these fresheners worsen the symptoms of asthma and allergies in highly sensitive individuals, as they often contain allergens. He adds, "Some of their components, like phthalates, can negatively affect the hormonal system. They also disrupt the endocrine glands and influence hormonal balance, posing risks to the reproductive system and the overall health of the body." The expert notes that incorrect use of air fresheners can lead to poisoning, especially among children and pets. He states, "Inhaling them in large quantities can cause serious poisoning that requires medical attention. Additionally, they contain flammable substances that can cause fires if used near an open flame or heat sources."

To reduce the risks associated with air fresheners, the expert recommends choosing alternative methods for freshening the air, such as regularly ventilating the space, using natural fragrances like essential oils, and maintaining cleanliness within the home. He says, "Indoor plants can be used to naturally purify the air. Additionally, dry mixtures of herbs and spices that do not contain harmful chemicals and are safe for health can be used. By opting for such alternatives, one can significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment and improve indoor air quality."
