Borussia Dortmund has announced the departure of their captain, Mats Hummels, as his contract with the club ends this month. Hummels has decided, in agreement with Borussia Dortmund's management, not to renew his contract after spending five years with the German club. He successfully led Borussia Dortmund to the UEFA Champions League final last season, but they lost the title to Real Madrid.
Borussia Dortmund issued an official statement saying: "Borussia Dortmund and Mats Hummels will part ways. The German defender has spent over 13 years at the club and has left a significant mark, winning two Bundesliga titles and DFB-Pokals with the club among numerous other achievements. We are grateful for the successful work we have done together. Thank you, Mats Hummels."
Mats Hummels is now a free agent and can sign with any club for free during the summer transfer window. The 35-year-old played 40 matches for Borussia Dortmund last season, scoring 4 goals and making 1 assist. Hummels joined Borussia Dortmund in 2019 from Bayern Munich during his second period at the club, having previously played for Dortmund from 2008 to 2016 after also moving from Bayern Munich, their traditional rival.
