The head of the App Store at Apple is stepping down in a move that is part of a restructuring within the profitable sales division, which has faced regulatory scrutiny over concerns that it wields too much influence over the mobile software market. Matt Fischer informed his team in an email: "After 21 years at Apple, I have made the decision to step away from our incredible company." He added, "This has been on my mind for some time, and while we are also reorganizing the team to better manage new challenges and opportunities, the time is right to pass the baton to two outstanding leaders on my team." Matt Fischer, the vice president who has managed the App Store since 2010, will leave the iPhone maker in October, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. The App Store group is being split into two teams: one supervising the Apple Store itself and the other responsible for alternative app distribution. Phil Schiller, the executive who ultimately oversees the App Store, is making these changes in response to regulatory actions that require Apple to allow alternative app stores and payment methods for apps on the iPhone, iPad, and other devices.
