Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper of the German national football team, announced his retirement from international duty after participating in 124 matches for his country since 2009. The 38-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper won the Golden Glove award when Germany claimed the 2014 World Cup. Neuer wrote on Instagram: "Today marks the end of my career with the German national football team. Those who know me understand that I did not make this decision lightly. I feel very good physically, and of course, the 2026 World Cup... was an attraction for me. Nevertheless, I have come to the decision that it is time to end my career with the national team."
The German Football Association stated that Neuer is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. They added in a statement: "No words can do him justice. But from the heart: Thank you, Manuel, for your unique and impressive success, of course. But especially for your kindness, dedication, and inspiration to your teammates and millions of fans and players around the world. You changed goalkeeping, you defined it. Just like with this team, your team. As a leader, role model, world champion, and friend. We will miss you."
