Jimmy Carter: I’m Trying to Stay Alive to Vote for Harris

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who is 99 years old and has been receiving palliative care at home since February 2023, expressed hope that he will stay alive to vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, according to a local newspaper report from one of his grandchildren. The "Atlanta Constitution," a daily newspaper from Georgia, where Carter hails from, reported on Saturday statements made by the grandson of the former Democratic president, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1st.

The newspaper reported that Chip Carter asked his father this week if he hoped to celebrate his birthday, and the former president responded through his grandson, Jason Carter, saying, "I’m trying to stay alive so that I can vote for Kamala Harris." According to his grandson, Carter appears "more lively and interested in politics and the ongoing war in Gaza" between Israel and Hamas.

Jimmy Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981 and is the oldest living U.S. president. Harris, who is 59 years old, secured the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidency to be held in November, after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race amid concerns regarding his age. Harris will compete against former Republican President Donald Trump.
