Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has apologized to his teammate, Son Heung-min, after making a racist comment about South Koreans that sparked outrage among football fans. Bentancur, who is from Uruguay, made the remark during a television program in his country, where he discussed a perceived similarity among all South Koreans before later apologizing for the comment, which was met with backlash.
Later, Bentancur, who is part of the Uruguay national team for the Copa America, posted an apology on Instagram late Friday. He wrote: "Brother Son, I apologize for what happened; it was just a very bad joke! You know I love you and I will not disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else. I love you, brother!"
The famous player's comment has angered social media users, expressing their rejection of his apology and calling for punishment. Meanwhile, Son, the captain of Tottenham, has not publicly responded to the apology.
