Austria achieved a 3-1 victory over Poland in Group D of the 2024 European Football Championship on Friday, renewing its hopes of finishing the group stage in one of the top two positions and advancing to the knockout round. Meanwhile, Poland remains at the bottom of the group without any points and has a slim chance of progressing to the next stage.
In a strong start, the Austrian team, which now has three points from two matches like France and the Netherlands, who will play later on Friday, applied early pressure that paid off in the ninth minute with a powerful header from Gernot Trauner at the near post.
Poland, which has now lost both of its matches, equalized through Krzysztof Piątek with his second attempt inside the penalty area after his first attempt was blocked after half an hour.
Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who had regained his fitness, came on in the 60th minute, but Austria scored two more goals. The first came from a smooth move finished by Christoph Baumgartner inside the penalty area in the 66th minute, followed by a penalty goal from Marko Arnautović about 12 minutes later.
