The Return of Le Drian Depends on the US-French Summit

The results of the French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian's visit, which covered the past week in Lebanon, indicate that no expected developments will follow this week regarding the presidential elections or the situation in the south or in Gaza. All the ongoing activity has not yet yielded practical results, suggesting that solutions remain out of reach in Lebanon and the region. However, this will not hinder continued efforts in various directions, hoping to achieve breakthroughs in the current deadlocks.

Official sources told "Al-Jumhuriya" that Le Drian conveyed to those he met, particularly Speaker of the House Nabih Berri, that he has come to the conclusion that the presidential election process should be based on the principles of dialogue, consultation, or discussion leading to the election of a president.

The sources confirmed that Le Drian's return to Beirut for a new mission is contingent on the outcomes of the meeting between the French and American presidents this week during their encounter on the sidelines of the Normandy landings anniversary commemorating World War II.

Regarding efforts to halt confrontations at the southern front, the sources stated: Le Drian completed with the Americans the document or proposals related to a political settlement to stop confrontations and violations of resolution 1701. We await the implementation of President Joe Biden’s announcement the day before yesterday concerning a deal to stop the war in Gaza and how and when it will reflect on Lebanon, after which further developments will follow in case the American envoy Amos Hochstein resumes his visits to the region.

### Jumblatt Movement

In the meantime, in the wake of Le Drian's recent visit, political activity led by the Progressive Socialist Party President Timour Jumblatt is set to begin, aimed at engaging with political leaders and parliamentary bloc heads in an effort to support initiatives to elect a president soon, before the region and the world enter the orbit of the American presidential elections and the international diplomatic hiatus in August.

Additionally, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Ali Bagheri Kani is visiting Lebanon today to hold talks on Lebanese, regional, and international developments. He will meet with Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib at 10 AM, then visit Ain al-Tineh to meet with Speaker Nabih Berri, and proceed to the Grand Serail to meet with Prime Minister Najib Mikati. A press conference will be held at 5:30 PM at the Iranian embassy in Bir Hassan.

Moreover, informed diplomatic sources revealed to "Al-Jumhuriya" that Bagheri Kani will also meet with the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and representatives of Palestinian factions from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. He is expected to visit the grave of Sayyed Nasrallah's mother in Raoudat al-Shuhada to recite Al-Fatiha and offer condolences to her family and Hezbollah leadership.
